PyGamer working briefly, now not responding

by newzaogao on Sun Oct 25, 2020 10:15 pm

Hi folks,

I just got the PyGamer, and when I turned it on at first it worked and I could play the example game. I then went through the tutorial here: https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-pygamer/overview. It said to update the PyGamer bootloader for Mac (I'm using a MacBook Pro) and that seemed to work. I used a USB cable to connect to the PyGamer and the PyGamer screen showed the right thing.

The problem started when I tried to add a MakeCode game, and since then the PyGamer has been totally non-responsive. When I plug it in a yellow light comes on (charging, I'm guessing) and if I hit reset a red light comes on briefly on the back and then goes out (not blinking, front LEDs not coming on).

I feel like it is completely bricked and useless now! My Mac isn't even showing the little icon coming up when it's plugged in. :(. I searched the internet a bunch for solutions but pretty much everything just said "don't use a USB cable that does just charging with no data". I don't think that is my problem since I was able to get the Bootloader mode working once.

Does anyone have any tips for how I can un-brick it? It's brand new!

Thanks in advance!

@newzaogao,

Do you know which bootloader you installed. eg. What is the exact filename you have on your mac?
I'm thinking this might have been an incorrect bootloader for this device.

The solid yellow LED indicates CircuitPython is in safe mode.

When the PyGamer is plugged into your Mac and you double-click the reset button do you get the boardnameBOOT drive?

If you can get a BOOT drive mounted then you can try install v3.10.0 of the pygamer UF2 file:

Thanks, Mikeysklar!

I also went to the Adafruit discord channel and someone answered my question there too.

All I had to do was click the reset button on the PyGamer twice within a second while plugged in to my Mac and then the drive re-appeared. I then put another game on there (dragging and dropping the file into the drive) and it all worked really well. I'm now off and running! I hope this helps someone else in the future.

Happy gaming!
