Fonts for Clue in Arduino

by oldblackcrow on Sat May 15, 2021 5:24 pm

Hi all!

I'm having some difficulty using fonts with the Clue in Arduino IDE. Starting from the beginning, I'm trying to follow this test (https://learn.adafruit.com/creating-cus ... lay-sketch) to move forward, but I keep getting an error.

Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
//Uncomment only one of the following lines to select your display.
#define USE_ILI9341   //2.4 inch 320x240 TFT Feather Wing
//#define USE_HX8357    //3.5 inch 480x320 TFT Feather Wing
//#define USE_HALLOWING //Adafruit Hallowing M0 Express
//#define USE_PYGAMER   //Adafruit PyGamer
#include "board_select.h"

#define STMPE_CS 6
#define TFT_CS   9
#define TFT_DC   10
#define SD_CS    5

I've uncommented each one individually while commenting out the ones I'm not using but they all fail with the following message:

Arduino: 1.8.13 (Windows 10), Board: "Adafruit CLUE, 0.3.2 SoftDevice s140 6.1.1, Level 0 (Release)"

Font-Testing001:1:10: fatal error: board_select.h: No such file or directory

1 | #include "board_select.h"

| ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

compilation terminated.

exit status 1

board_select.h: No such file or directory

This report would have more information with
"Show verbose output during compilation"
option enabled in File -> Preferences.

Is there a workaround for this? Thanks so much!

You get the errors because you don't have a 240x320 Featherwing display, but a built in 240x240 1,3inch IPS one.
Go to Tools->Libraries->Library Manager and search for:
Adafruit ST7735
Install it, go to the sample files under File->examples->Adafruit ST7735 and choose Graphicstest and change the comments as follows:
Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
// For 1.44" and 1.8" TFT with ST7735 use:
//Adafruit_ST7735 tft = Adafruit_ST7735(TFT_CS, TFT_DC, TFT_RST);

// For 1.14", 1.3", 1.54", and 2.0" TFT with ST7789:
// Adafruit_ST7789 tft = Adafruit_ST7789(TFT_CS, TFT_DC, TFT_RST);

Also the SPI pins are different, so we need to change that too.
P0.12 = CS
P0.13 = DC
P0.14 = SCK
P0.15 = MOSI
P1.03 = RESET
P1.05 = Backlight
But these are port-numbers, not Arduino code pin numbers. I will replace them with the correct Arduino numbers below.
Now change this line:
Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
// OR for the ST7789-based displays, we will use this call
//Adafruit_ST7789 tft = Adafruit_ST7789(TFT_CS, TFT_DC, TFT_MOSI, TFT_SCLK, TFT_RST);

to
Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
// OR for the ST7789-based displays, we will use this call
#define CLUE_CS   31
#define CLUE_DC   32
#define CLUE_MOSI 30
#define CLUE_SCK  29
#define CLUE_RST  33
Adafruit_ST7789 tft = Adafruit_ST7789(CLUE_CS, CLUE_DC, CLUE_MOSI, CLUE_SCK, CLUE_RST);

Try running the sample sketch, and if that works, start messing with the fonts from there.
If you don't get errors, but don't see much, we might need to put on the backlight manually as well.
I've no CLUE if this works ;) , only a PyBadge, where I do something similar, but with different pin numbers.

Thank you for helping me with this! I'm a bit confused though, as there are several lines that seem to be in conflict. Here's the entire code:

Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE

I'm probably doing something wrong, but I don't know what. Thanks again!

You have to uncomment the second line by placing // in front. The display is a 7789

Ok... I fixed that and a few more errors I found and this is the code with no errors:

Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE

//Adafruit_ST7735 tft = Adafruit_ST7735(TFT_CS, TFT_DC, TFT_RST);

Well, I got the Arcada graphics test to work... So I'll go from there?

Yes. it is best to strip all code from a demo to the point that you can just write a text in font X to a certain position, and then merge that with other code that takes care of other parts of your final goals.
