Recover Bricked Clue Alpha?

by jmaloney on Mon Jul 13, 2020 1:51 pm

My Clue Alpha is completely unresponsive. Pressing the reset button once or multiple times does not make the NeoPixel light up at all and the red status LED remains off. The only visible sign that the board even has power is that the display backlight turns on. A meter shows 3.3 volts on the 3v and GND pads.

The board doesn't show up either a USB drive or a serial port. (My USB cable and Arduino setup work fine with other boards, including a production Clue board.)

The board does not appear as a Bluetooth device in the Bluefruit LE Connect app -- but neither does my working Clue, so maybe it's not supposed to.

Any idea how to bring the board back to life? There doesn't seem to be a DFU pad anywhere.

Thanks!

Hello jmaloney,

Sorry to hear about your Alpha CLUE being bricked. You might have a shot of reviving it using a jtag programmer. I do see in the schematic that the SWDIO and SWCLK circular pads have been broken out. The two circular pads on the right side of the board with SWDIO on top and SWCLK on bottom.

Thanks for the pointer to those pads.

I think I need the NRF52 equivalent of the instructions you sent (which are for Atmel SAM boards), probably using a tool like nrfutil, nrfjprog, jlink, stlink or similar.. Can anyone point me to the Clue board bootloader code and instructions for how to reinstall it?

Also wondering about the cheapest firmware programmer hardware I'd need to do this install. If the programmer is more than $40 I'll probably just throw away the board. (If it comes to that, I'd be happy to donate it to a good cause if someone pays the postage.)

The Segger J-Link Mini is $20.

The NRF52 works the same as the the Atmel SAMD chips. You can see specifics for the NRF52840 in our learn guide and the github archive for the bootloader.
