coming soon... TR-8060 Analogue Drumsynth

Post by substyler »

hi,

I know... long time ago but I'm back :)
just being here to tell you that my TR-8060 full analogue drumsynth is almost finished. It combines the sounds from the 808 and 606 in just one device ;)
Based on the original circuit layouts from Roland I have made a compact PCB measuring 300mm x 160mm so you can build your own TR-8060 drumsynth for under 250 euros. (believe me... it IS possible)

It's without sequencer yet, just with +5V instrument & accent trigger inputs for each instrument so you can build this machine with your own sequencer, or with a cheap MIDI to trigger circuit.
In the spirit of open source i'm planning to give all the documentation and PCB files for free (only for private use, NO commercial use Mr. T! ), but it will also be possible to buy kits from me containing a professional made PCB and some rare parts which are needed. otherwise you have to make the PCBs by yourself.

there's a little movie which is showing you the machine during development and testing phase. unfortunately from a cellphone... but you'll get an idea about the sound and it's quality. TR-8060 development
give me just a few weeks more to get it all together and for a website.
I'll let you know once it has startet

cheers,
SubStyler

Very cool! Well done..
So which sounds are from the 606, and which from the 808? Im about to build an 808 bass drum clone (This one http://www.anestheticaudio.com/index.ph ... -bassdrum/ )
But if that is basically built into your machine, then, hmm! :D
Im surely interested! And.. No sequencer.. "Yet" you say?
Looks like you did a great job though..

hey Luap ;)

the circuits of the bassdrum, snare, tom and hihats from the 808 and 606 are nearly the same. if you take a look on the old service manuals you'll see that there are not really big differences.
so I decided to give a loooot of modification possibilities to the TR-8060: the bass drum instrument has 7 pots and two switches to modify the sound so the bassdrum can sound like many old Roland machines. the same is valid for the snare drum: 7 potentiometers and two switches... you can control the proportion of noise... the kind of noise (you can feed via switch with white noise, pink noise or noise from the schmitt trigger)
there is even TUNE control for the cowbell

for example the hihats and snare can sound like 606, 808 or even CR-78. pretty cool I think.
I'll show you a movie on YT once I have a machine completed... with enclosure and so.

no sequencer yet means: no sequencer YET

cheers,

Thanks Substyler! And now that I think about it.. I probably wouldn't need the sequencer anyway (i've got lots of various kinds of sequencer around already), so the simple midi trigger circuit you mentioned would probably do just fine. Thats more or less how I found myself using my jomox drum machine much of the time anyway..
Im liking all the extra controls you rolled into this. I'll be keeping an eye on this thread ;)

sounds like a job for a midibox seqV4L..

Let me know if you are looking for beta testers

the midibox sequencer will work great and it's pretty cheap.

This is great! I can't wait to see the finished machine. I'm in for a kit or just PCB. :)

Wow this looks really awesome. Good work.
I'd like a kit when they're available.

ok, so the PCBs are ordered. once they're here I'll prepare the kits.

The kit contains:
1x printed main PCB (professional made from my PCB house)
1x CA3080 IC DIP (you can also use LM3080)
1x SK30A-Y Transistor TO-92
1x LM339 Quad Comparator IC DIP
1x MOS4584 Schmitt Trigger IC DIP
1x SC828 (RNZ) Transistor for Noise

the rest is easy to get... just some standard resistors, diodes and transistors. you can use SA733P and SC945P or BC640/BC639.
I'm working on the documentation and construction manual an I think in about ~3-4 weeks it will be all available.

cheers,

Would it be possible to do the rest as a Digikey/mouser BOM?
Cheers
