Powering Adafruit Audio FX Sound Board

Hi. I just ordered the Adafruit Audio FX Sound Board...

I understand that it operates at 3-5 V. I want to use a 9V battery, because there are other components in the project that need 9V. How can I step down the voltage from the battery to the board? Is it as simple as adding a resistor in line? If so, what size resistor should I use? Help and advise is much appreciated!

You can't lower a device's supply voltage with a resistor. Any time the current flowing through the load changes, the voltage across the resistor will change too.

What you need is a voltage regulator like these:
