And you see the same thing with the thermocouple connected?

OK. Let's try replacing it. Please contact support@adafruit.com with a link to this thread.

This board is quite old and could have been damaged. I will find a supplier nearby, thanks for your help and patience I learnt quite a bit. :)

hold the two probes apart. That is an open-circuit reading.

Now touch the two probes together. That is a short circuit. This should be "0" or some very small number.

I am curios what could have caused this problem? I got the amplifier a couple months back and everything was working fine, then I updated the libraries for it because the old libraries supposedly didnt support the max 31850 and i was worried about getting an accurate temprature reading. Could this have caused a problem?

What library were you using before? If you go back to the previous library, does the problem go away?

I went back to the previous libraries and its not outputting any temperatures.
here are the libraries:

Those are known-good libraries. Sounds like the chip has gone bad.

Sorry I relised i made a typo, I meant to say it is not outputting any ERRORS, I am getting a temperature but im unsure if it is correct as supposedly the libraries dont support the chip

Do you have a thermometer or other sensor to compare as a reference?

Looking at the specs, the MAX31850 register layout is pretty much the same as the other one-wire temperature sensors. But it has the added fault bits. So the old driver without MAX31850 support would just report whatever is in the temperature registers and ignore the fault bits.

that makes so much sense, a couple weeks back I adjusted the library code to ignore the errors as an experiment and it gave me a temperature. so that explains it. Again thanks for your help!
