Help with Microlipo charger

by KenFellows on Tue Oct 19, 2021 9:42 pm

I ordered two Microlipo 3.7v/4.2v lipoly/lilon battery chargers. I shorted the back jumper per instructions. Both of my chargers started to smoke once I plugged them into the PC's USB port. Now both the red and green lights are on all the time. It does not appear that they are charging the battery. I was going to use the MicrolipoI with the PL 603030 3.7v 500mAh battery that I ordered. Is there a better charger to use with the battery I ordered? I am going to use the battery to power the Circuit Playground Classic board.

Post photos of the MicroLiPo boards and the LiPos you had connected to them please. We need to see the LiPos and their connections, but don't actually plug the LiPos into the boards.. there's no point in risking more damage.

800x600 images usually work best.

It looks like that LiPo's positive and negative wires go into the JST-PH2 header with the opposite polarity of ours:

https://www.adafruit.com/product/1578

There are no official standards for connector polarity, and you can find both versions online.

It isn't hard to fix though: the plastic JST-PH2 plug has a couple of tabs on the bottom that hold the wire terminals in place. You can lift those with a small screwdriver, pull the terminals out, then replace the terminals so they match our chargers and boards.
