Neotrellis Soundboard Project emitting a hum?

by Cazniak on Tue Dec 28, 2021 4:00 am

Hi,

I recently competed the Neotrellis Sound Board project (https://learn.adafruit.com/neotrellis-soundboard) and the board works great :) The only problem is that it constantly emits a humming sound, as shown here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/grxZ7D2u5cGDBqmQ6

Has anyone had this occur before? The volume is only down very low and this still happens. The components used are those referenced in the project from either digikey or the Adafruit store. The only components missing are the brass standoffs which are in the mail still. This effect occurs when running on battery as well as when powered via USB.

I don't recognize the Stanley device in the video. I assume it's a speaker?

Hi Mike :)

That's just a desk-mounted vise. It comes into frame when I hold the microphone of the phone close to the circuit :D
Sorry for the confusion

What are you using as a speaker?

Specifically, does it have its own power source, and if so, where is it getting its power?

Hi Mike,

It was being powered by the recommended lithium ion battery listed in the featured products section. The speaker is also from Adafruit on the featured products page, being driven from the proposed.

Is the LiPo powering both the Soundboard and the speaker?

The kind of noise you described often comes from a ground loop: a connection through the power supply in parallel with the audio connection, which allows noise from the power supply to get into the audio signal.
