Mono Files not playing on the Audio FX board

Post by leatherjen »

I'm working on a project to add sound to a cosplay prop for my son. It's a Shamisen for Kubo and the Two Strings, and I have it mostly working, but there's one bug I'm currently hacking around rather than solving.

When I convert my .ogg files to mono using the website you've linked in the tutorial (http://audio.online-convert.com/convert-to-ogg) nothing plays. (I've checked the headphone jack, don't hear anything there either.) Yet the stereo .ogg files I made using that same site work fine. What's up?

Here's the list of components I used: http://www.adafruit.com/wishlists/434396

I have the right channel of the sound board wired into the right channel on the Amp and then wired to the speaker. Stereo files play fine, both through the headphone jack and the speaker. (I'm mostly concerned that I'm only getting half the music track, though to be honest, I haven't listened to them to see if the tracks I'm using do anything fun with the stereo or not.)

I've also noticed the chip on the amp is getting very hot very fast when turned on. I don't have this problem with another one I've used in another project. I don't know if this is a problem or not. It seems to play fine, but I don't want it burning itself out.

(There's not much difference in the projects, either. Both are only using one channel in, though in the other case I wired the stereo cables in but didn't wire them on this one. Would that be part of either problem?)

Heat is always worth checking.. what part of the FX Board is getting hot?

The fx board is fine. It's the center chip on the class D Amp board.

Ah.. thanks for the clarification. Some FX Boards have a built-in power amp.

What bitrate and sampling rate are you using for the conversion to OGG?

I was leaving those set to "no change" (though I did also try 128 kbps and 44100 Hz), simply uploaded the working stereo file and set it to change to mono.

And I double checked, I don't have an amp on the sound board I ordered, so I don't think I'm double amping it or anything. I'm honestly not sure what to check (and since I'm using this at GenCon, I'm more or less out of time to fiddle with it at this point). I'm mostly concerned about the chip burning itself up on the amp. (At least, not until after the Cosplay parade.)

Try lowering the values on the OGG conversion. The VS1000 isn't fast enough to handle high bitrates.

Regarding the amp, does it only heat up when you're playing sounds, or is it hot all the time?

Seems to be all the time, as soon as I power it on.

That sounds like the amp may have an internal short. When did you get it?

I'm sorry, but I'm afraid that's past our 30-day return/replace period.
