So I was working on the tail project listed on your site : https://learn.adafruit.com/really-simpl ... -tail/code
I got all the way through the coding before I realized that the tinker 5v was not reading in the USB port, any reason as to why this might be?

Re: Tinker 5v
If you mean it doesn't show up in the Arduino IDE's Tools->Serial Port menu, it isn't supposed to:
https://learn.adafruit.com/introducing- ... -ide#blink
The Trinket doesn't have any real USB chips, so you have to manually launch the bootloader to make it emulate a USB connection.

Re: Tinker 5v
So I have gone through the bootloader, and downloaded all the adafruit models onto my comp (which was listed in the bootloader steps as well i think) but i still seem to be getting this error message: (Thank you so much for replying and trying to help me out!)

Re: Tinker 5v
Double-check your USB cable by using it to connect some other, known-working device to the computer.
There's a plague of charge-only cables out there with USB connectors at both ends, but no wires to carry the data signals. We see people get caught by those every day.
Assuming the cable is good, does the Trinket's red LED pulse when you click the reset button?

Re: Tinker 5v
Yes the trinket itself seems to be doing everything in the videos, and every now and then motor will give 1 jerk back and forth, but then it will stop and won't repeat the process. I have tried 3 different usb cables as well and 2/3 gave the trinket the red pulsing light.

Re: Tinker 5v
Did you test the cables with some other device? Strange as it sounds, the one where the Trinket's LED didn't pulse might be the good one.
There's a known issue with USB-3 ports emitting a burst of data that's about 60 times faster than the Trinket's CPU clock. The bootloader can't cope with that, so it goes into a fast reset loop that makes it look like the LED is glowing dimly but not pulsing.
The usual solution for that problem is to put a cheap/old USB-2 hub between the Trinket and the computer. That kind of hub usually blocks the high-speed signals and works as a protocol translator.

Re: Tinker 5v
So I have tried 5 different usb on each my 5 usb ports (3 are the blue ports and 2 are the black ports), I am sill getting the same result. Could it be possible that something is wrong with the soldering/wiring?

Post a photo showing your hardware and connections and we'll take a look. 800x600 images usually work best.

I'm afraid all I get from that link is a spinner and an eventual "click here to pay for download bandwidth" image.
You can post images directly to the forum using the "Choose File" button under the pane where you compose a message. The forum limits file sizes, but 800x600 is usually good.

Re: Tinker 5v
So I noticed when I hook up the trinket it does not show up under the normal USB controllers in my device manager, instead it shows up under another catagory: libusb-win32 devices > USBtiny
is this normal?
is this normal?

Re: Tinker 5v
In the Arduino IDE, set the board option from the Tools menu to "Adafruit Trinket 8mhz" and programmer to "USBtinyISP", the default settings may have been different. Try the upload again, it should compile and if it doesn't connect to the board to upload, press the reset button on the Trinket to kick off the bootloader. You may have to try a couple of times to get the timing right. You may get some warning messages after it uploads but they can be ignored and the program should run. By the way, is that a Chromebook you are using? It might be something to note in fixing the problem. Good luck.

The Trinket doesn't have a real USB-to-Serial converter, its bootloader just pretends to be a USB device long enough to upload the firmware. You have to start the bootloader manually by clicking the reset button every time you want to upload new code.

Re: Tinker 5v
I have experience with several different boards I've bought from Adafruit. I took a step back into the past and found a spy camera and a trinket 8mhz that I bought. I am trying to load the stock program that ladyada wrote.
https://learn.adafruit.com/timelapse-spy-camera
I have read the threads above have the correct settings in the Arduino IDE (i think) set and the trinket seems to be acting normally after reset. (Green LED on and red LED blinking at reset). The following error is occurring

Using Port : usb
Using Programmer : usbtiny
An error occurred while uploading the sketch
avrdude: Error: Could not find USBtiny device (0x1781/0xc9f)
avrdude done. Thank you.
I have checked my cable with the Saleae Logic Probe and it works correctly with the cable I am using. (This is an 8 Bit USB Logic Analyzer Probe)
Any help with this board would be appreciated. It is the most frustrating piece of electronics I have ever used... :D I know I can get this camera working with any board, I just wanted to learn the stock approach.
Love all the other boards especially the Feather series! A little embarrassed I can't get this one programmed....

Re: Tinker 5v
Are you pressing the Trinket's reset button before you upload? You have to launch the bootloader manually.
