Defective Pi Zero W connector / defective v2 camera

Post by pjmoore »

Hello Adafruit - I received an email indicating I should post the issue as part of the return/replace process. My order number is 1564122-7884929121
I have two issues:
1) The Pi Zero W board p/n 3443 supplied works, but the video cable board
connector appears to be faulty. I don't think the clamp part is supposed to
come completely free but it does. Otherwise the board functions. It just won't hold the ribbon cable securely.
I would like to exchange this board for one that has a proper video connector assembly, please.
2) The Pi camera Board v2, p/n 3099 is defective. I tested a working camera on
my Zero W boards ( I have two) and a Pi 3 and it worked fine. I tried the V2 camera
on the same three boards. The v2 camera board failed on all three processors.
I would like to exchange the defective V2 camera for one that works.

These tests were performed by a very experienced computer scientist.
The firmware and software were all updated/upgraded to the latest stable versions.

So what is the next step to get replacements?

Post a photo showing the clamp on the RasPi doing what it shouldn't please. 800x600 images usually work best.

What resolution would you prefer on a picture of the camera not working?

*laugh* We generally prefer 800x600.

Have you disconnected and reseated the Kapton tab that connects the camera module to the PCB? Those can get partially disconnected in ways that break the connection. The rest of the comparison with another RasPi and cameras eliminates any other problems with the hardware or system configuration external to the camera, but that connection is still a known source of trouble.

Yes. We tested a working camera on a working zero w and it worked ok. Using the same zero w and the same ribbon cable, the new camera did not work. We were very careful to isolate the problems, i.e.,

old zero+new cable+new camera=fail*
old zero+new cable+old camera=ok
old pi3+old cable+old camera=ok
old pi3+old cable+new camera=fail*

*see attached photo of image from failed camera

Therefore, the new cable is OK, and the new camera is defective.

The new zero was not used because the edge connector was faulty.
I was not used to eliminate noobness

The tester has extensive experience with Linux, Raspberry Pi products, Octopi and camera applications in a print farm environment

I am a customer that greatly benefits from suggestions to solve problems that might appear to be defects, but are merely inexperience.

My tester, however, is a pro, so I am quite convinced the problem is hardware and not wetware.

I didn't ask about the flex cable between the RasPi and the camera PCB. I asked about the connection the camera module and the PCB:

So far you haven't answered that question.

Hardware doesn't care about credentials, so we don't have that luxury either. Our debugging process is driven by observational data. Please perform the test and report your observations.

The picture clarifies your request nicely, Mike. I will be happy to check that next.

No Joy, Mike. Unplugged, visually inspected, and reinstalled the kapton connector to the board.
No picture.
Reinstalled v1 camera, and it worked fine.
Any other ideas?

That's the information I needed, thank you.

Send a note containing a link to this thread and your order number to [email protected]. The folks there will get you a replacement Zero-W and Pi Camera.

The replacement camera came in today, and by gosh and by golly it worked right off the bat.

Who would've thought it possible?
