embedded home automation web and database server

Does anyone think it would be possible to make a product like this on your own:

http://www.universal-devices.com/99i.htm

It should have a 10/100/1000 ethernet jack, and a usb or serial port to interface with a powerlinc controller for home automation.

It would run a web server so you could access it from anywhere with an internet connection.
It would also host a database that would contain most of the logic and triggers (pretty heavy DB)

Make from scratch - no.

Make from stuff - yes, easily.

Mightyohm has a tutorial on modding a asus router to do cool things on openwrt, there is already a web server on it, ladyada has details on getting python running on it. A USB to serial will do the X10 if you don't have the USB model of it.

IR can be done with LIRC - not done that myself but there is plenty out there on how to do it.

Chances are internally that box uses an embedded OS like linux to do its thing anyway so you are paying 100s more for the fancy case and some arbitary limits to be raised in software in case of the better models.
