How would I make my robot follow me

I understand the basic sensors that can be used with a microcontroller, but heres a concept I cant grasp.

How exactly would I use a sensor with a 4 wheeled robot to follow me everywhere I go.
I get that simple motion sensors are not the answer here, I was thinking Id have to use the sonar sensor?

Anyways, how would I make it follow me and only me & not get distracted by passing by cars or other people?

you could use IR sensors and tape a lit up IR LED to yourself.
