Heartbeat sensor

Does anyone know what type of sensors are used in heart rate monitors to detect heart beats? I've seen some designs that use a high intensity LED and LDR to be used with a finger. I'm more curious to find out what sensor is used to detect the electrical signals from the heart itself.

The most reliable way is to buy an after-market chest strap http://www.polar.fi/en/products/accessories/T31_coded_transmitter

And use the interface available from sparkfun http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=8661 (bare module available too http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=8660.

Not cheap, but way more accurate than any DIY solution I've seen.
