Trellis functioning erratically

by crthomas0 on Mon Nov 20, 2017 7:09 pm

Hi, I've assembled, addressed, and wired four trellis boards [PRODUCT ID: 1929] and am seeing erratic behavior when I run the trellis test program from the library. I have several videos to show what is happening, however, they are too larger to attach using this forum. I've also noticed that there is a missing component [I'm guessing that its a cap] on two of the boards, and have attached a picture of each of these locations.
Thanks,
Chris

Yes, those would be debouncing capacitors. From the nature of the damage, it looks like they were cracked off mechanically.

There should be one at each edge of the board, and all of them have the same job: absorb any volage spikes on the supply rails. Losing one isn't great, but won't make the board fail instantly.

Could you post a photo showing your overall assembly please?

This is the best photo that I have now of the entire assembly. Let me know if you want to see more and I can get another photo later today.

those capacitors wouldn't be causing inconsistant behavior - there's plenty of others.

maybe try the trellis one at a time (e.g. not in a panel?) see if you can narrow down the issue

The panels are addressed as suggested in the tutorial:

And here is a photo I extracted from the video to show the LED state that occurred during the first test:

I re-flowed the two solder joints for 0x70 LED #6 [did not do anything with 0x72 LED #1] and then ran the test again. The following photos are each separate runs of the same trellis test program and show the different LED states:

Any thoughts/suggestions/things to test based on the last set of info/photos before I disassemble the panels to test them individually as suggested by adafruit2?

Some of the LED soldering looks suspect, and that could cause LED's to be out that are supposed to be on. However, I am not sure what other wrong behavior you are getting.
