Header Size

Post by rdavis1 »

I'm finishing up my first custom circuit board! I would like to solder headers to the double-sided copper PCB board, so I can avoid trashing the components if there is an error in the track routing. Can you help recommend headers for the following components? I've done my research and I believe they should all use the same size headers because they have the same pin pitch, but now I'm starting to doubt myself.
  • Adafruit Feather M0 Basic Proto - ATSAMD21 Cortex M0 PRODUCT ID: 2772
2.8" TFT LCD with Touchscreen Breakout Board w/MicroSD Socket - ILI9341 PRODUCT ID: 1770
Adafruit MCP9808 Precision I2C Temperature Sensor PRODUCT ID: 1782

Yes those are all the standard .1" spacing headers. They have a variety of both genders in the store. Just type headers in the search box.

I have a follow-up question on this topic.

I'm putting together a PCB for the Adafruit AudioFX board and a few other components. I'd like to use a socket for the AudioFX board instead of soldering it directly to the board.

I don't know exact what kind of male or female headers to use. As suggested above, I searched the adafruit shop for 'headers' and I see lots of 'stacking' female headers as well as the male headers that came with the AudioFX board. But what if I don't want the height of stacking headers? What kind of male and female headers should I get to mount the AudioFX board to a PCB at minimal height?

I found these on Amazon, but these also look like stacking headers: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074HVBTZ4 but even these look like the AudioFX board and some other components would stand .25" to .33" off the surface of the PCB.

I'm looking more for something how standard DIP ICs and sockets work, but with the AudioFX board,

Thanks.

These for the FX board:

and these on your PCB:

The female ones can be cut, but you'll loose a pin in the process (where the cut happens). And you may want to sand or clean up the cut after.

Great, thanks!

Even though the female PCB pins say "2mm pitch" are they still 0.1" spacing?

Good catch. Meant these:
https://www.adafruit.com/product/598

There a few other options here:
https://www.adafruit.com/category/154

The row spacing appears to be 0.8":
https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-aud ... ut-version
and I don't think there's a DIP carrier for that.
