When confronted with an undocumented LED array, I usually just probe all the pin combinations with GND and +3V and a current limiting resistor. This is pretty straightforward.
What is the equivalent procedure for a VFD, nixie tube, or other unknown high(ish) voltage display? Assume that you don't know whether it takes AC or DC, or what voltage.

vfd's have a heater and ground. they'll be ~100ohm apart. put ~3V on one and ground on the other. it should not glow brightly. perhaps 20-80mA draw
