Building an RFID livestock feeder
I am needing help getting started in the right direction with this project. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated. Looking to do a feed intake study in small ruminants and it is important to have individual intake data. The idea I have is to have the sheep wear an RFID tag and when they approach the feeder, a gate will unlock if the number matches and the sheep can put its head into the feeder. I would need a device/series of devices that would read the ear tag, unlock the gate, and keep a data log of the time the gate was opened. Ideally I would like to have 3-4 of these gates and built at the least possible cost.

We do have a range of RFID tags and readers in the store. https://www.adafruit.com/index.php?main ... y&cPath=55
But the readers we carry have a range of only a few centimeters. I'm guessing that your application would require a bit more than that. If you check with some of the RFID specialist vendors, there are "far field" RFID antennae with ranges in the 10's of centimeters.
