Help with Ag watering system design

Post by LewisFarm »

I am looking for two systems recommendations for an agricultural watering system for our farm. We currently have a 1,100 gallon stock tank located 15' off the ground with 2" inflow and 2"outflow. There is a standpipe with manual on/off approximately 400' away. Because of the limitations of our water source, we need to fill the tank at night.

Our goal is to use this tank for gravity-fed drip tape watering in a remote field. We are located in New Hampshire, USA.

Recommendation 1: remotely-controlled valve and control system (remote site, must be battery or solar) for filling the tank with a float sensor to turn off to prevent overfilling. It can use a "dumb" float switch.

Recommendation 2: remotely controlled valve and control system to open the outflow for watering.

The two systems will require separate timers.

Thanks for your help!

I am also a farmer in Delaware. Your tank has 2" inlet and outlet but do you really need that much flow? If you can reduce it so you can use 1" valves you can use a couple of these for an off the shelf solution https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004LPBS6K/re ... B002YPSQBE We use a couple dozen of the Orbit 24 vac solenoid valves in our commercial greenhouse and get many years of service from most of them. You will need your float shutoff valve but it looks like there are plenty to choose from https://www.zoro.com/float-valves/c/5801/ If you really need 2" valves your project cost will probably increase by a factor of 10.

I just checked the head calculations for your 15' elevation tank and the pressure may be too low for the outlet valve to operate. The orbit valve specs says a minimum of 15 psi and your 15 ft elevated tank is only generating about 7 psi. I have never used a low head irrigation source so will not be much help with that.

Here is a 12v - 2 inch ball valve that should work with low head. https://www.gamut.com/p/electronically- ... t-Njk0NjA0 You will need a way to generate and store the needed 12v power. You will also need a 12v timer to control it.
