adafruit audio fx sound board

by dewfish on Wed Dec 19, 2018 12:21 pm

I recently purchased the Adafruit Audio FX sound board +2x2W Amp WAV/OGG Trigger 16MB. I want to use it in a life size C-3PO statue, to make him talk when the motion sensor is activated. What I was hoping to achieve was to have numerous C-3PO quotes loaded onto the soundboard, and have 1 quote spoken every time the sensor was activated. Is this possible and if so, how do i do this?
My other question is, how do I transfer the sounds onto the soundboard ? I plugged the soundboard into my laptop to transfer the file, but the soundboard didn't appear on my laptop, any ideas? My final question is, How do I increase the volume, the test voice of LEFT RIGHT LEFT RIGHT, was quite low ?

We should figure out why you can't copy files over first. Here's the guide on that:

Are you using a charge only USB cable?

Hi, thanks for your response. I cant test your file because when I plug the soundboard into my laptop, it does not show up under devices with removable storage. It's like it can't find it. I’m not sure if it’s a charging only cable but i’ve bought a correct cable which I’ll try tomorrow and let you know.

OK, and if you can, try some other USB device to make sure the cable is OK.

Ok, so I bought a new cable and now my laptop recognises the soundboard. I uploaded the file you told me, turned C-3PO on to try the voice and nothing happened. I even renamed it for all 5 triggers without success. Any ideas what to do next ? Attached is a picture of how it's wired. Trigger 0 and Ground, the two power cables and speaker wires are wired to the soundboard

Anything happening with the LEDs? Hopefully at least the power one is coming on. Then the ACT LED should come one when/if it's playing a file.

The Green power LED comes on when powered up but no other lights come on. They may of when the LEFT RIGHT LEFT RIGHT used to play, before I deleted that to upload the new file, but I just can’t remember.

The linked file is a zip file. You need to extract the contents and put those on the sound board. Not the zip file itself. So make sure that's what you did.

I didn't know that sorry, computers aren't my thing. Ok so now iv'e extracted the files, then sent them to the soundboard, the green power light is on and a red LED goes on and off as the recorded sounds start and stop, but there's only a humming sound coming from the speakers, on and off as it goes through the files, no voice. At least we have some positive signs. what can you suggest now ?

Try moving your trigger pin to #2. That file is a simple wav that plays on trigger, so better for troubleshooting. The audio is a voice saying "track two".

And try also pins 3, 7, 8, 9, 10. They have similar simple trigger audio files associated with them.

So you’re saying to take the wire off 0 and soldier it onto number 2 ?

Oh it's soldered. In that case let's try it a different way - by renaming the files. And let's just make it super simple with only one file on the card. You can always get these back from the zip file.

Delete all of the files on the card but the one named T02.wav. Then, rename that file to T00.wav. The audio will still be "track two", but at least it should play when you trigger on pin 0.

I deleted every file except T02.wav. then I renamed it T00.wav. Nothing happened at all, I'll try moving the wire from 0 to 2 and try that.

You can also just use a spare jumper wire to trigger the other pins. Since you've soldered on headers, should be easy to just jumper any of the trigger pins to GND to test.
