Adafruit SHARP Memory Display Breakout - 1.3" 168x144

by lightcast on Mon Feb 11, 2019 12:12 pm

I purchased two Adafruit SHARP Memory Display Breakout - 1.3" 168x144 and I can't get anything to display on the screens. I just see a bunch of dots. I'm using a brand new soldering iron and I soldered the header pins on each of the display boards. I'm using the sample code provided and I still can't get anything to display.

After I couldn't get it working I solder the header pins on two 0.96 OLED display boards. I tested those and it worked perfectly. I mention this because I don't think it's my soldering work.

Any suggestions?

Please post some photos showing your soldering and connections and we'll take a look.

I've posted a pic. Do you want me to post a pic of both of the screens? I posted one.

Thanks,

The connections all look correct. Try re-wiring in a different area of the breadboard with a different set of jumpers. Breadboard connections are notoriously flaky. And we occasionally see a bad jumper too.

So I tried a new breadboard and brand new wires and also another Arduino. Same thing. Do you think that I somehow shorted it out?

Do you get the same pattern every time on both displays? Or is it completely random?

OK. So looks like both are displaying the same thing. Does that pattern change at all as the "sharpmemtest.ino" example is running?

No. It's the same for both. I'm using an UNO R3 if that makes any difference. The same pattern gets displayed as soon as I connect my UNO to my Mac. When I unplug it it goes away. So the same thing happened when I purchased this display from Amazon a month ago. I first thought that it was something with my soldering and I shorted it out. So I purchased two more directly from Adafruit. So I now have three boards that are doing the same thing :(

But is your UNO running the "sharpmemtest.ino" example code?

Yes. I uploaded the sketch to both of my UNOs and the same thing happens for both. Should I post the code here?

I'll check with manufacturing to see if anything changed on these displays. Since all 3 are acting the same, it doesn't sound like a damaged display.

Something did indeed change! The current generation display is significantly higher resolution than the original (144x168 vs 96x96). Since it requires a frame buffer in RAM, there is not enough memory in an UNO to drive them. (See the comment at the top of the example code file: https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_SH ... st.ino#L29 )

You would need a processor with more RAM like a Metro M0 : https://www.adafruit.com/product/3505

Thanks for the reply. I was going crazy. I guess I should've read the code. It says on line 30: it WILL NOT WORK on Arduino Uno. LOL

Thanks a bunch for your help!
