Spacing of RGB LEDs in WS2811 too big

by cosmo22 on Wed Feb 13, 2019 7:49 pm

Hi,

I'm using a strip of WS2811 LEDs. The problem i am having is that when i make a color like teal (light blue), and i put a diffuser over it (a piece of polyurethane that has a frosted surface), if the diffuser is too close the led (like 1/4" or less), then i can see a green glow off to one side. That is, it looks like the actual light emitters are too far apart to blend at this distance.

I am wondering if other controllable LEDs, such as the WS2812b, have their LEDs any closer together. I cant seem to find the LED placement in the datasheet.

Thanks!

Thanks for the reply and the link. I think the picture that says "2811" is mislabeled, as it matches the diagram of the 2812 on the left in the picture. I've attached a picture of my 2811 glowing. As a side note, i've found it is very hard to take nice picture of glowing LEDS UNLESS you turn the brightness all the way down. In this one, the color is set to "1,1,1"!

In any case, you have inspired me to look at my LED closeup. In my picture i can see what the problem is: the R and G LEDs are much closer to each other (about 1/2 the distance) than the B. The 2812 appears to have the LEDs spaced evenly, and the 2812B has two of the LEDs closer than those in the 2812 and 2811, with one of them still farther away than these two. So overall the 2812B has the closest LEDs.

I would like one where the LEDs were even closer!

Here are the 2811 with the LEDs on, and a comparison of the 2811, 2812, and 2812B (thanks to yhtomitsy on the instructables link above)

There are RGB devices in smaller packages in the DotStar category. They may deliver more compact emitter spacing. The smaller packages aren't offered in strip form, though. I see DotStar Micro LEDs (APA102–2020), Adafruit DotStar High Density 8x8 Grid, and Ultra High Density DotStar LED PCB Bar. There's also the NeoPixel Nano 2427 RGB LEDs, for people equipped to manage SMT components. I have no personal experience with these products, but they might be viable alternatives. Hope this helps.

Hallelujah!
