Adafruit Micro-Lipo Charger - Destroyed!

by Eleecho on Sun Apr 28, 2019 4:14 pm

Hey All,

I recently picked up an Adafruit Micro-Lipo Charger for a project.

I hooked it up to 5v power with the usb in and all seemed well.

Then I plugged in a 3.7v lipo battery and the MCP73831 power management chip instantly fired! lol :(

The battery was 3.7V 650mAh.

Any ideas of why this happened? User error?

Please halpp!

Check the polarity on the LiPo JST connector. Sony picked a wiring standard that is opposite from the rest of the industry - even though it uses the same connector, so there are lots of reverse-wired cells out there.

@bill,

Yep! You nailed it.

Was reversed polarity on the JST connector.

Learned my lesson there.

Thanks for the quick response.

Cheers

You can reverse the JST plug polarity by exchanging the wires.
Looking closely you see on one side of the plug small plastic hooks that keep the contacts crimped on the wire in place.
With a needle you can lift those and insert the contacts in proper order.
Do not short battery contacts during this manipulation.
