I have a project that will require a 5" HD (1280x720) display w/Touchscreen. I was unable to find an "off the shelf" component. Even though there are numerous 5" or 7" displays available, they are are 800x600 or lower.

So, I found a manufacture that I worked with that was able to provide me a 1280x720 5" display (basically for a phone) bonded a capacitive touch overlay to it, and was able to provide a MIPI to HDMI converter board. Not exactly cheap in small quantities, but not too bad in large lots (around $100). This is for connecting to a Raspberry Pi, but any SBC with an HDMI and USB connector will work as well. Still a few issues to work out (12v vs 5v for the MIPI board), and connectors are just flimsy pcb pigtails. I also had to 3D print a case for the display since it had no solid backing. But it has promise.

I'm not an electrical engineer, so I am stumbling my way through creating a sort of "adapter" board to go from the USB 5v to the 12v that the display needs (amperage is very low). My idea is to piggyback the power for the display onto the USB touchscreen connector.

My question is why are there not any displays like this already out? There are so many cheap HD displays for phones out that I would have figured these would be available everywhere. And if it works out, I will be ordering in BULK ... 500-1000.

Most of the higher density displays use a different signal protocol, like Qualia:

It comes down to a question of data load and refresh rate. A 1280x720 display has about twice as many pixels as a 480x800 display, so you have to push data about twice as fast to maintain the same refresh rate. The techniques for moving data fast involve things like LVDS (Low-Voltage Differential Signals) that are more involved than the dot-clock protocols used in lower resolution displays.
