Pi Zero W Failed Video & USB

Hello!

Zay in Support requested I post this here to get approval for exchange. Here's the trouble with my Pi Zero W:

What doesn't work:
- Video out via HDMI - no signal, not even the color palette.
- USB input - Caps lock light does not illuminate when depressed and I "blind typing" to log in and shutdown has no affect.

What does work:
- Power: LED illuminates
- WiFi: I can Ping and SSH into the unit via WiFi correctly.
- Pi Camera: Works correclty (I've created a web server and web-app to view the feed)
- GPIO: Python script accurately records the input.

What I've tried:
- 2 different SD cards with bootable systems - both give same results as above.
- 2 different TVs/displays - both which used to work, now don't.

Those will be separate issues, but they might both show up when the RasPi does its hardware recognition process while booting.

Post the output from the command `dmesg` between CODE tags please. That will tell us what the kernel thinks.

Hmm.. the messages show the USB hub being recognized and configured. Did you have the USB keyboard connected while the Zero was booting?

If not, what output do you get from the command `lsusb` when you connect a device to the OTG port?

I don't see any messages about the video system one way or another, but the mini-HDMI adapters can be flaky. Have you used the adapter with another Zero or Zero-W to confirm that it works?

Hi Mike,

Video: I don't have any other Zero W (or other mini HDMI device) to check the HDMI adaptor with. But I did try with different cables to the adaptor and no change. :(

USB: I did have it connected at the time but tried again. This time the Caps Lock lights up when tapped, and it shows in lsusb. Although, it doesn't accept any blind input: pi / password. Maybe the first time I didn't have a tight fit.

Video: I pulled out a 3rd, old display to try on as many devices as possible, and this one works. I'm glad to have some visibility, but I don't understand why my original, primary display won't connect. I've re-verified the config in /boot/config.txt and they match the appropriate settings for that display. I've even tried removing them and re-entering from a backup.

Although, with another set of cables, and after trying on the old display, I at least get a "flashing sync" light on my primary display, which is more than before. Here's the output of dmesg now:

Try uncommenting this line in your /boot/config.txt file:

#config_hdmi_boost=4
The RasPi emits a weak HDMI signal by default to save power. It can be too weak for some displays, and displays connected through longer HDMI cables.

You can take the boost value up to 11, but values over 7 can cause physical damage to either the RasPi or a display.

Thank you for the suggestion. I tried up to 6, but still no change. The display works fine with my other systems, just not this Pi. What's next?

Do you happen to have another mini-HDMI adapter you can try? Those can also cause problems.

This is my only Zero W, so I only have 1 mini-HDMI adaptor.
I agree it's strange that the Pi+Adaptor work on 1 monitor and not another, while that monitor works fine with other computers.

FWIW, the resolution of the non-working display is larger than the one it works on. I have been updating the boot/config.txt to match the correct display, using the same config settings from when it worked. See code below.

Have these adaptors been known to fail at larger resolutions?

I haven't seen a mini-HDMI adapter issue that was related to display resolution, but we've seen the adapters themselves fail.

It sounds like you might have one with a bit of unexpected parasitic inductance or capacitance.. low enough for lower resolution signals to work, but high enough to cause problems when you start sending higer resolution data which needs a faster clock rate.
