Parallax Ping Sensor Help

by mschiff on Mon Apr 12, 2010 6:27 pm

I am using the Arduino Mini v4 set up according to the picture on the following tutorial: http://arduino.cc/en/Guide/ArduinoMini with the FTDI USB connector.

I also have the Ping sensor connected according to the following tutorial:
http://arduino.cc/en/Tutorial/Ping

When I look at the the serial readout it prints 0in 0cm. If i touch the metal plate on the bottom of my bread board the distance measures jump up to 42in -50in and the serial.println's are carried out faster (I can tell because the green light on the FTDI USB adapter blinks at a faster frequency then when I am not touching the bottom of the breadboard and the readings are 0 and 0.)

Does anyone know what might be going on?

Bad connections or internal short. This should NOT be happening and is a BAD thing. Stop now and find out why it is happening before you destroy something.

So I am pretty sure that I have the circuit for the Arduino Mini correct (since my sketches are uploading normally) and I am pretty sure that I have the circuit for the ping sensor correct I am getting values in my serial moniter (code appears to be working).

Right now my thought is that because of the breadboard design (plastic breadboard on double sided sticky foam mounted to metal) the long pins on the mini may go all the way through to the metal backing. Could that be happening?
