Looking for the right proximity sensor

by darianprimer on Thu Jul 18, 2019 1:57 pm

I am trying to find right sensor to use in order to find the exact distance to a screw head. The issue is that the screw I am detecting are extremely small and there are several screws close together. I need to be able to detect a specific screw and not get any interference from the screws directly nearby. the screws are roughly 1/14 of an inch apart and the heads of the screws are approximately 1/20 of an inch in diameter. I just need to be able to measure an exact distance to a specific screw and use that data in order to set a tooling offset.

Proximity sensors measure the distance to the nearest surface, not to any particular object. And I don't think anything we carry will have enough resolution or precision to be useful for setting a datum for machining.

The standard method is to use a touch probe.
