Adafruit Audio FX sound board w/ 16mb flash not functioning

by DinkDankDunk on Sat Jul 20, 2019 4:24 pm

Hello,

I received my order of two Adafruit Audio FX sound boards w/ 16mb flash today to install into a project of mine. I am using a 3xAA battery pack to power the board, and the board itself is plugged into speakers.

At first the board worked great; I have sound files attached to pins 1-5 and they all activated when their corresponding button was pressed. However, hours later, the board does not play any files when any button is pressed. My laptop recognizes the board when it is plugged into my laptop, and all the sound files are properly loaded in the board. A green light turns on when the board is plugged into the battery pack and my laptop. The red light does not turn on when a pin is activated. When the board was working I noticed the red light would flicker for a moment whenever the power was turned on.

I have two other boards that are experiencing the same issue. They are not soldered to anything like board #1, but they do not play sound files when a wire is connected from ground to pin 0-10. However, just like board #1, boards #2 and #3 are able to be recognized by my laptop.

Thank you for your help!

Post a photo showing your hardware and connections and we'll take a look. 800x600 images usually work best.

Thank you. Some of the solder joints look like they could use a touch-up, including the wire connected to the GND pin.

Also, what voltages do you see on the Vin and Bat pins?

I redid the solder for pin 1 and the ground pin, but no sounds play.

The voltage reading for the Vin pin was 2.28 volts, but I could not find a Bat pin. I included a picture one of the other non-functioning boards I have so you can see what I see, should I test the voltage for the BUS pin?

I replaced the batteries on a whim and everything works!!

So I guess my new question is, how long should this soundboard be functional with 3 AA batteries? If I had to guess I’d say the old batteries only saw a 2 hours of use powering the board.

Sorry, I was thinking of the USB pin. It sounds like you found the core problem though.

The VS1000 runs at 3.3V, and has an internal voltage regulator. Those usually need at least half a volt of additional voltage to work properly, so you want at least 4V.

Alkaline cells are nominally 1.5V, but their voltage drops to 0.9V by the time they’re 95% discharged. A 4xAA battery pack will let you get more power from the cells than a 3xAA pack.
