Which Optical Sensor to use for Optical Encoder

Hi,

I'm currently working on a project that involves building an optical encoder that can be sensed with Arduino. I started off by purchasing the TSL 2591 light sensor and got it working with the arduino board to read light measurements. However, the problem I have been getting is that the light sensor seems to have a slow sample rate which is limited by the "integration Time." The integration time of this sensor (100ms) is much too slow for my application which requires a high sampling rate. Is there any other sensor available that isn't limited by a slow integration time? Am I using the wrong class of sensor? I see that if i look at the photo-interruptor product, it's used as an optical encoder and the read rate is very quick. Any information on this would be great, thanks!

For optical encoders, a photo interruptor or reflective sensor are typically used. Use the interruptors with a slotted wheel, or the reflective sensor with a black/white patterned wheel.

Response time is quite fast and you can connect them to an interrupt pin for best performance.
