2m Dotstar 144 LED Power issue

by TroyOdey on Sat Aug 10, 2019 8:33 pm

I am building a light strip for a bass drum in a marching band. I am using an Arduino Uno, digital sound sensor, 4*4 keypad, 20000mAh 5V/2.4A battery bank, and 2m 144 Dotstar LED strip. When the sound sensor is triggered the lights turn on and fade off at different rates, depending on what key you pick. My issue is when using a secondary color like purple or orange the lights initially are red, or another primary color, then turn to the correct color once the brightness goes down. The lights are on for less then a second at a time. I know this is a power issue because I don't have this problem when using 1m of the LED strip. I calculated the amp draw to be about 17.3A max for full white. Doing some research I think the max I need is more like 10A. I have been using the 5V pin off of the Arduino to power the light. I was wondering what would be the easiest way to fix this issue. Should i add a transistor to increase current? Should I add another power source to the lights? Should i use a different power source? The power source has to be portable since this is for a drummer is in a marching band. Any help would be much appreciated.

If you are using the power bank try connecting to the same point you power the Uno without running through any of the Uno's circuit.

So, create a node between the battery bank, Uno, and Lights. Then run them in parallel?
