Custom Capacitive Touch Grid

by justinctanner on Tue Aug 13, 2019 2:50 pm

Hey all,

Im working on a project with a MPR121 12channel Capacative touch shield.

However, I am using large areas for the project touch pads, and the sensitivity goes way down and I run into issues where it doesnt detect a touch/release and messes up the whole project.

I could mess with the thresholds, but that hasnt proved fruitful.

I'd rather limit my functional surface area by getting a custom copper grid pcb made but cant seem to find a reasonably easy way to do so.

Basically, I want a grid like the attached photo. Dense near the user, less dense farther out, but still dense enough that most touches would register, with a bit of area to clip onto or solder onto.

Any ideas on how to make something like this or get it made?

You can design a PCB with traces in that shape using Eagle, KiCad, or any of the proprietary board design packages.

Places like Seeed Studios do custom PCB fabrication for small batches:
