Mini FX Soundboard 16mg Power Issues

by liftgeekrepeat on Fri Aug 16, 2019 2:17 pm

Hi! I recently picked up the Adafruit Mini FX Soundboard 16mg along with the Class D Stereo Amp. I'm very new to working on hardware side of things so I was hoping to get some additional troubleshooting help.

The board connected fine, green light on, and I uploaded my files, all OGG and correctly named to the triggers. I ejected the board and began connecting to the amp and speakers. I wired up the amp, putting the positive R/L outputs to the soundboard and grounded the negative outputs.

I have a DC 12v power supply with stepdown to 5v current and 2 outputs. I checked on a breadboard first that the soundboard received power and the green light was on. I then added the amp to the other output and the speakers had a slight hum which confirmed power. However when I went to test the triggers to the ground pin and there was no sound.

I checked my connections then tried to plug the board back onto my PC. At this point I noticed the green light was no longer on. I was doing a lot of back and forth and I honestly can't say when it stopped. Popped up with an error, scanned the drive, now the drive is still recognized and my files are all there with no errors, but still no power.

I went back to try to power via breadboard again and now I still get no green light and when I turn the power on I get one red flash then nothing.

Tldr, no green light, red flash when powering, but still recognized by PC with no issues. Basically did I at some point manage to fry the board? The troubleshooting guide says red light is bad but gives no indication of what to do if it happens.

Post a photo showing your hardware and connections please. 800x600 images usually work best.

Hi, sorry for the delay. I had already separated the sound board from the amp to attempt to try it with different power sources, so thats why it's just back to the breadboard. I included an example of the same power setup with my 5v trinket pro to show that it is getting enough power.

I also have a brief video here showing what happens when I switch the power on: http://imgur.com/gallery/H9XtMFA

A few of the solder joints could use a bit of touch-up.. I can see exposed gold on some of the pads. Try giving those a dab of flux and reheating them. You want a smooth, shiny cone that covers the pad and sweeps up to the pin.

What voltage do you see between Vin and GND when the board doesn't work?

Thanks, I touched up the two pins that had any exposed gold, the CS and pin 1. No change from doing that. I ordered a multimeter that should be here Tuesday, so when I am able to get this voltage to you I will.

In the meantime I ended up ordering another SFX board because I'm on some tight time constraints for this prop, but I'd still love to salvage this one if possible!

If the board works from a 5V supply, the hardware should be good.

The VS1000 needs about 4.5V minimum to operate though, and is known to get flaky when the supply voltage falls below 4V.
