M4 receiver/fob not working

by johnwargo on Sat Aug 24, 2019 1:36 pm

I bought three receivers and a fob and I'm having a heck of a time getting them to work. I was finally able to get one of them working, but the pins are backwards - Pin D0 runs on button D, D1, buton C, etc. That surprised me and cost me some time.

When I finally did get it to work, it only works some of the time and other times it toggles on/off repeatedly (about 4Hz) as long as I hold the button down (which is not how this is supposed to work)

Are these things that flaky? What do I do here? Replace the fob? receiver? Help!!!

Sorry for the delay.

Could you post a photo showing the receivers please? 800x600 images usually work best.

Here's a photo of all of them.

Thank you. I don't see anything obviously out of place in the hardware.

Try straightening the antennas and see if that has any effect on the range or ability to detect a signal. It won't have any effect on my decision about whether to issue a replacement.. we know that devices have to be hooked up before they can be tested.

I hooked up two out of three of them with little success. Straighten it like all the way out straight?

Yep.. changing the shape of an antenna changes the way it behaves, sometimes enough to have a noticable effect on reception.

OK, so I expanded the antenna on two of the three receivers (I'd let the smoke out of the third one) and it works now, but only at a distance of between 12 and 20 inches. Shouldn't it be longer than that?

Yeah, you should get more range than that.

Let's try a new fob and see if that improves things. Send a note containing a link to this page and your order number to support@adafruit.com. The folks there will get you a new keyfob.

OK, so this still isn't working. I got the new FOB and tested it out and I can't get more than 36 inches range with this.

I thought perhaps I wasn't powering the receiver enough and in testing noticed that my input was less than 4V, so I switched in a USB charger delivering 5.5 volts and didn't get any more range. I tested this with two receivers with varied results (one gets me about 24 inch range and the other 36 inches).

Help, I need this for my remote control flame throwing pumpkin for halloween. :-)

A signal at any range means the keyfob works, so let's try a new receiver.

Send another note to support@adafruit.com and the folks there will get you a new M4 receiver.

they're refusing my reorder because of quantities - Like I said, I have two receivers exhibiting the same behavior (one 24 inch range and the other 36 inch range). I requested two replacements and they cancelled my order because of that. Why not leave the order be and work this out internally rather than force more work on me.

Nothing we do internally will make the hardware in your possession behave differently.

I'll check with the support team to see why they didn't do the replacement though.. my authorization (defined as a "send a link to this page" post) should do the job.

Because I have two receivers that aren’t working and they’re only expecting to replace one. Somehow even though I told you and them that I have two receivers exhibiting the same behavior, they only want to replace one.

I've cleared that up with the support team. They should contact you about replacement of both receivers.
