Raspberry PI3B+ won't boot, broke my Microsd card

by TangT on Thu Feb 06, 2020 3:28 am

Hey all.
I was told to make a post here from customer support, hopefully this is the right forum for it. I recently purchased a Raspberry Pi 3B+ (PID: 3775) , as well as a heatsink (PID: 3082), power supply (PID: 1995), and case (PID: 2258) Order Number 2239394-5206435157. I used my own 64gb micro sd card, and after formatting it to my chosen OS, I plugged everything in. However the raspberry Pi did not start up, the power light turned red, but nothing appeared on screen regardless of whether I used HDMI or VGA. Upon trying to remove the microsd card from the machine I found it was very hot, even though the system had been plugged in for less than 5 minutes . When I tried plugging the Microsd card into my pc and phone, neither device recognized the card at all, not even giving me the option to format it and try again, and I'm fairly certain it's been broken. I don't want to risk trying any more microsd cards because they might get destroyed as well. I believe that my unit may have been faulty. My only other idea is that because I was using a GERT VGA 666 adapter, it somehow fried the unit, though I haven't heard any other stories online of this happening to people, and I bought mine from a highly rated US Ebay seller, though if you guys are fairly certain the VGA adapter was what caused it I'll send the Ebay seller a message and go from there. I've read about other people having similar problems with their RPI, and it doesn't sound like it was caused by a faulty GPIO addon. I've included pictures of the adapter in question for good measure.
For the record, I bought my power supply directly from adafruit, it's 5V 2.5A Switching Power Supply with 20AWG MicroUSB, and was supposed to be designed for the RPI3B+ so there shouldn't be any power issues.
If anyone has any ideas on how to get my Pi working, I'd really appreciate it. If not, then I'd like to exchange it for a functioning unit, new heatsink, and if possible another microsd card, since the system appears to have fried my old one.
Here are the pictures, they were too big for the regular file upload system

My only other idea is that because I was using a GERT VGA 666 adapter,

This unfortunately might be related. It would have been good to do a basic checkout of just the Pi before attaching any peripheral hardware. The GPIO header pins expose very delicate parts of the Pi and it is very easy to end up damaging it.
