hands-free timer

by LazlarLyricon on Tue May 26, 2020 10:11 pm

I'd like to build a simple countdown timer with a four-figure digital display, that can be set to begin at a certain value - four minutes, for example - each time it is activated. The trick is that it would be activated gesturally - the timer starts counting down when you bring a hand within it's trip zone, the same way that the monitor on which I'm composing this question is turned on and off. Which Adafruit component would best provide that contactless functionality, at a range of about two inches? What platform or component would be the best on which to build it? And - could it be constructed or programmed such that only certain things would trigger it? Apologies for an open-ended question, but it's not very-much in my wheelhouse.

We have some simple proximity sensors like the VCNL 4010 and 4040:

These can detect a hand in the detection zone.

Somewhat more sophisticated, there is the APDS9960.

This is an array of sensors that can detect specific types of motion within the detection zone. It also detects color.

All of the above sensors will work with most any microprocessor board. Our "Clue" development board has an APDS9960 (as well as a display, buzzer, Bluetooth and a bunch of other sensors) built in. That might be a good 'all-in-one' solution for you.

And there is this sensor which is designed to work with the Raspberry Pi:

Does the Clue already have all the necessary hardware, then?

If so - is it just a matter of programming it?

Yes, the CLUE has the gesture sensor, a display and a buzzer/speaker on board. You wold just need to program it with your timing functionality.
