We are using this sensor across a 12" distance. Measurements indicate new parts can be detected well over 12". However, over time, some sensors stop being detected over 12" and testing them reveals that the output of the LED is diminished and the detection distance is now reduced to less than 12". Is there any reason why the intensity of the LED would diminish over time, roughly 3 - 4 months? This has happened for about 15 sensors. They are powered by 3.3V. Increasing the failed sensors to 5V doesn't increase the range significantly.

All LEDs lose light output eventually, but the loss after three or four months shouldn't be too bad.

Check the amount of current the transmitting LED uses. It should be somewhere around 9mA.

The current draw for working and failed LEDs is about the same, at around 9mA. Is there any way to determine if the LEDs are failed, or how they failed?

You could use a light sensor like the VEML7700 to measure the amount of light output at a fixed distance:

The VEML7700 is reasonably sensitive to IR, so it should give you numeric values good enough for comparison.

We are able to determine that the light output has diminished using a test jig, where the receiver is held in a fixed position and transmitter is pulled away on a rail until the receiver fails to detect it. Can you indicate the vendor of this part? The part has Omron stamped on it, but Omron reps don't recognize it. Can you confirm if Omron supplies this part or if it's another supplier?

I'm afraid our supplier contracts forbid sharing source information with third parties. We can nod meaningfully toward any datasheets we're allowed to publish, but in this case that doesn't help:

What are the operating conditions where the IR LEDs are installed? Things like elevated temperature can make LEDs degrade faster, and electrical noise from things like motors can always cause problems.
