Firewire to USB

by ecConnect on Wed Jul 08, 2020 6:33 pm

I'll apologize from the onset, I'm new to forums. I hope I'm in the right place.

Here on forums, I searched "firewire" and it mostly gave me topics related to apple type hardware. I have a windows, firewire scanner.

I was watching "USB, serial & you..." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xIDMlmAyXRQ, and was hoping that someone can help me to get my windows, firewire scanner to work by plugging it into my laptop via USB connection.

I have tried a Firewire-to-USB adaptor, but that doesn't work, as obviously there is more to it (perhaps extra circuitry & software). It is a good scanner but I can't use it as I don't have a computer with firewire. It would be a waste to trash it.

Thank you for your support.

I'm afraid we can't offer much help. Firewire is a high-speed protocol that's especially good at transmitting large chunks of data, and it runs faster than the microcontrollers we carry. Even our USB protocol analyzer (https://www.adafruit.com/product/708) would be too slow.

Both Firewire and USB are complex protocols, and neither one is beginner friendly. An adapter really is your best bet.
