Need guidance for setting up servos with arduino

by ZaighamAbbas on Thu Jul 16, 2020 4:52 pm

Good morning,
I am trying to create a robot which will use around 6 of these servos:

http://www.towerpro.com.tw/product/mg958/

Their operating voltage is 4.8v-6.6V. I figured that I can't just rely on my Arduino board to power and control these, and will need some sort of an external power supply and a servo-controlling board. However, I don't know which ones to use. Do you have any advice on what I should buy?

Regards,

6 servos of that size will take a lot of power. I'd check with a battery specialist or RC hobby site for a rechargeable 6v NiMH pack - and mating charger. Another alternative is a 4xAA alkaline cell battery pack. But NiMH cells hold up better under heavy load that alkaline cells.

An Arduino can control 6 servos. But it will take up 6 pins and a bit of processor overhead. We have several versions of our PWM/Servo board that can control up to 16 servos. The shield version plugs directly into an Arduino UNO or compatible. We also have WIng, HAT and standalone breakout board versions.

Hey,
So I received this https://www.adafruit.com/product/2928 product and a relevant power supply. However, how do I connect it up with an arduino? I thought it will have some kind of a usb-typeC port builtin.

Which Arduino are you using? The FeatherWing version is designed to plug directly into one of the Feather processors. https://www.adafruit.com/category/835
We also have a shield version designed to plug into classic Arduinos: https://www.adafruit.com/product/1411
And a standalone breakout board version: https://www.adafruit.com/product/815

But all have essentially the same circuitry, so you can hook it up with jumper wires. The power connections will differ depending on the type of Arduino you are using.

You can connect it by soldering some jumpers.
The Metro is a 5v board, so you will need to make connections as shown below.
Your servo battery pack will connect to the "Servo Power" terminals in the upper left. There should be a screw terminal block packaged with the board.
