With motors being involved, it could be electrical noise interfering. Are you seeing basic I2C communications issues even without motors running?

I have not, but I also haven't seen any issues when using another i2c device while the motors are running.

Different devices have different levels of susceptibility. This kind of interference can also sometimes be hard to track down and deal with. But if it works with motors off, but then starts having issues with motors on, it seems likely that is what is happening. It may also be power related, but that would generally affect other devices as well.

Also keep in mind I2C was meant for very short runs between components on a small device. So it's not a very robust interface for long wire runs in a noisy environment.

But this setup worked consistently before, with a different controller (specifically, the Beaglebone).

Never mind, it does still sometimes through the error even when the motors aren't moving.

In that case, it could still be a connection issue, but with your larger setup.

If you go back to the very basic and simple breadboard test, can you recreate the issue?

It's not a connection issue. I took everything off our setup and tried shaking the cords around a lot and it did not have any issues.

I took all of the other electronics off as well and yes I was able to recreate the problem on a breadboard.

Ugh. OK. Run the simple test again on *both* I2C ports. Is it still just an issue on the one port? Or are you seeing the issue on both ports?
