Learning about Power Calculations for Solar

Post by kayaking_t »

I'm struggling with calculating the necessary power requirements for a project I'm working on to size a battery that will then be charged via solar. Can anyone point me in the right direction to help me learn how to work through what needs to be done? TIA!

You should start by reading through this guide on energy budgets: https://learn.adafruit.com/energy-budgets

Once you have a handle on what the power requirements of your circuitry are, you can start designing a solar power system that can meet that demand. Because solar power is highly variable, you need to plan for the worst case. For example, to survive several days of overcast weather during the short sunlight hours of winter, you will need to plan on additional storage capacity and possibly a higher charge rate.
