Tall Header Sockets?

by james_block on Thu Sep 23, 2010 9:25 pm

Hi all,

I'm designing a daughterboard to connect to an existing PCB we have. The existing board has a standard 24-pin header on it which was made for this purpose (or for attaching a cable). Unfortunately the original designer didn't think things through and there are some clearance issues with mounting a daughterboard.

What I'm looking for is a 24-pin header socket, 2 rows of 12 contacts at 0.100" pitch, that will put the daughterboard about half an inch above the main board. It should be through-hole, both for ease of soldering by hand and for the increased mechanical strength. I haven't been able to find a header socket this tall by looking in the usual places, but maybe I missed something.

Other solutions to get the daughterboard the clearance it needs while still being mounted directly on top of the mainboard are welcome, as long as they're not too fiddly or expensive (we'll be making a number of these by hand). If such a part doesn't exist, I've got other options; this is just the easiest way (by far) to meet our tight mechanical requirements.

Thanks for any suggestions.

www.samtec.com has everything.

Look at these:

Leadstyle 12 should do the trick. 0.435" height

Thanks, that was exactly what I was looking for! Now I just have to find somewhere that will sell them to me in prototype quantities with a reasonable lead time....

And their standard lead time is about 1 week. Made in USA...

Digikey doesn't stock these, or if they do they've hidden it well. But that's not so important, as I've ordered samples sufficient to finish our prototype run (if all goes well) direct from Samtec.

Thanks for all your help, everyone. You've saved me many headaches!
