Pi Zero WH leaking RF

by darkangel921 on Sat May 01, 2021 9:17 am

I bought a Pi Zero WH for an MMDVM modem, after about 3 weeks the wifi started going out intermittently, currently when I turn the zero on either with or without the MMDVM hat every transceiver I have, digital and analog, 2 meters and 70 centimeters goes crazy with interference. I'm sure there's some sort of RF leak coming from the pi zero and it's either cause or effect of the intermittent wifi.

I don't know if it will help you, but you might try https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/ and see if anyone knows. Somebody with knowledge may post here but I don't think technical problems are what most people are here for.

Is this not where I come to post my problem for the purposes of getting a replacement or refund? I bought this a little over a month ago and it's wiping out every radio in my house. The behavior gets worse every time I try to boot it.

the pi zero w has passed fcc testing, so it could very well be the HAT - have you tried putting it into a grounded/faraday box?

I put the hat on my P1 3B+ and it ran fine. Also I reflashed and ran the board bare with 3 different SD cards with no luck

yah the 3B has a tin over the RF section, the pi zero does not. it isnt an SD card issue. you could try turning off the wifi chip

This is used a radio relay to DMR talkgroups, the board is worthless to me in a faraday cage or without wifi. Upon further testing of the bare board this morning unsurprisingly pings are showing 100% packet loss and every page I try to access is unresponsive. I need it replaced, I'm pretty sure the problem is isolated to this one unit since tens of thousands of Hams use this board in their hotspots every day.

Perhaps the Pi Zero WH is not what you need for this application. Contact support@adafruit.com with a link to this thread and they will arrange a refund. You can research another device that will meet your needs.

It's the exact unit described in the project. I realize that you guys dont send out very many defective units but it IS possible. There's a problem with the wifi in this one, unfortunately it will probably cost 1/2 the cost of the unit to ship it back to you, check it when you get it, there's something wrong with the wifi. Thanks for the help. order#2520825-2201997908
