Jumbotron for Table Hockey - trigger video clip with button

by M28cruiser on Fri May 07, 2021 5:23 pm

I'm want to build a mini jumbotron to customize my table hockey. I would like to have the ability to loop a several library of videos, and ideally trigger certain video when a goal is scored with a momentary switch.

Conceptually something like the Adafruit Audio FX Mini Sound Board, but with video output instead of just sound. Does anyone have any recommendations of what screen & board I can use for a project like that. Thanks :)

I think you are best off with the 3-6mm pitch matrix panels with a HUB75 connector.
You can drive them with a Metro Express M4 and Matrix Shield for example.
There are other variations as well, the Feather M4 with Matrix Featherwing and the Matrix Portal M4.

That would probably be easiest to do with a RasPi, especially if the videos will be encoded.

Roughly how big do you want the display to be, and what kind of resolution do you want?

I was more thinking the way Pinball machines show short animations on certain events: GOAL! for example, like gif-banners. On say 128x32 or 196x32 pixels, on the bar over the middle of the field. Maybe you can throw a sketch/link a sample video.
If you want really bigger, with true vide and change it often, I think the Raspberry Pi is good as system to generate the video, but I would let it generate over HDMI, and have a true HDMI->HUB75 processing board in that scenario.
What is the maximum numbers of pixels the Pi can push itself with the HAT?
