3 LG LP097QX1 - iPad screens not working

by moraogando on Wed May 12, 2021 5:49 pm

Hi there,
I purchased 4 LG LP097QX1 - iPad 3/4 Retina Display, with the corresponding adafruit drivers Qualia Bare Driver Board for LP097QX1 Display.

3 of the screens DO NOT WORK upon connecting them with the driver. The connectors look good, I was very careful with all of them. None of them was forced. The power and display cables are working fine with other screens. And yet 3 out of the 4 are not recognized by the computer even though they do turn on and have backlight. Is there a way to fix them?
I understand I'm outside the return policy timeline, but I'm extremely disappointed about this. The product didn't look new to begin with, they all looked kind of dirty/used, which I honestly don't mind but it makes me think this could have been a damaged batch.

If they can't be fixed, I need replacements for these screens and I wonder if at least I can have a discount or some guarantee that the next ones will work. I don't understand how the product can be so unreliable.

Could you please guide me into a way of fixing them? the screens are unused, exactly as they were, and again the connector was not forced and entered just fine into the driver's port.

Thank you very much in advance for any help you might be able to provide.

We test all displays before approving them for sale, so a 75% defect rate out of the box seems unlikely. Post a photo showing your hardware and connections and we'll take a look.

800x600 images usually work best.

Hi there, thanks for the super fast reply!
Here are 2 pictures, one of them is connected and the other one is disconnected to show the connector in case there might be some damage in the pins. I can upload all the pictures from the 3 screens. Or any other part that you'd like to check. As I said the driver turns on fine, the screen goes on and I can control the brightness with the buttons on the driver, but that's all I can do, it's never recognized by a computer.
Let me know what you think!

If you swap displays with the driver boards, does the failure to connect follow the displays or the drivers? Does one display work with all the drivers, do all the displays work with one driver but not the others, or is there some other combination?

Hi there, thanks again for the super fast reply!!
So I was testing all the combinations again, and I also swapped a bunch of display cables that I already had. It seems that for some reason the displayport to mini-displayport cables that I tried (also purchased in Adafruit, P1698A, I tried 3 of them just in case) are not working (not recognized by computer), but if I use a displayport to displayport it DOES WORK.

What's very strange is that there's one screen (same exact model) that is working with this displayport to mini-displayport, so I discarded that I could be the cable early on.
Is there a chance I can use these screens with a displayport to mini-displayport cable?

I only have miniDP inputs in my graphics card.

thanks so much !

Hmm.. this cable is limited to DisplayPort 1.1, which might be part of the problem:

I'll need to check with someone who knows those displays better to see if that's an issue.

I was also super surprised, I don't understand the inconsistency. I verified that one of the screens works with a DP to miniDP adaptor in a Windows computer with an NVidia Qudaro P600. graphics card. Then I used the same adaptor cable in the same computer to try the other 3 screens and they don't work. But all 3 screens work just fine with a DP to DP cable into a different computer, also in windows.

Could it be the graphics card configuration? could it be that different screens have slightly different compatibility with miniDP (is the version here important?)?

Thanks again!

we test with a mac, and most folks use macs...so it could be come gfx card config. we dont own that card so don't have any insight beyond that. sounds like ya have a way of using them!

I can test in mac, but the computer I need to use them with is a Windows computer with that specific graphics card. I don't get to pic that unfortunately, so any info/hint on how to fix this for windows would be super appreciated.

Also if for some reason Windows is not supported it'd be nice to know this in advance. Also this doesn't really explain why SOME screens work and others don't? Are the drivers different?

no idea. you can return them if they are not usable, but as you can see - they work fine on your mac. we have had windows people use them, we just dont own that graphics card

Is there a possibility that some screens have different compatibility?
This is what happens if I restart the computer with the screen connected.
I'd really love to just be able to use your product and it seems like something that might be fixable with the appropriate expertise.

The screen is supposed to work in windows, yet I'm having issues with a super standard graphics card. Could you at least point me to an alternative product that might work better?

Sorry that got sent by accident. I'm trying to figure out what is the difference between the screens.
I checked that it worked before buying them so, I guess the model might be slightly different?
If I can't get them to work I'd need to send them back but I'm trying to avoid that.
