Humm I ran kicad in linux and windows and no problem.
I am shure the kicad forums could be very helpful.
Well when you share the source code it is like sharing a recipe.
When you share the result it is sharing the baked bread.
It is great you made the baked bread open to the world but what if someone wants to try to make
whole grain bread with cherries and seeds.
Hardware design if it was like software design at least in my open source projects you can play with all the components the modules the parts lists all have the manufacturers part numbers not just mouser or digikeys.
The schematic symbols I use are all included the schematic can be edited and so can the board.

So like recompiling or porting the hardware if you want lets say microcontroler board + 64 pin surface mount sensor you can take the kicad design of the microcontroler and the kicad design of the sensor make a upper level project and add 2 lower level schematics and connect the common pins by global and local pin connections like you would global and local variables.

This way you can see how open source hardware can behave like open source software.
