Re: Need help installing Adafruit 2.4" PiTFT HAT with Resist

Post by MarkIpswich »

Just an update that I found the official power bank charger and now the low voltage warning is gone.

However still can't get the interactive display to show when installing. Done the recommended working version and the latest version, including OS lite. Also tried the console one as well.

Any ideas???

Will another installer script work or does it have to be on that one?

I've tried some old images, still don't work.

On this page however

https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-2-4 ... sy-install

The unsupported images:

PiTFT 2.4"/2.8"/3.2" Resistive Images

Raspbian Jessie Lite 2016/9/23-based image

Raspbian Wheezy 2015/09/09-based image
Raspbian 2014/06/20-based image

I tried the top one to see if it would actually work which it did not. Come up with a couple of error messages.

But when doing the install script, the screen was still lit up but the white disappeared. It never done that before.

Does everything seem OK on the back of the sceen?

Maybe the DPI connector? I presume that's the orange thing?

How do I see if that's properly connected?

Just to the left of that white thing, you can just about tell that white thing is not in a straight line.

In this image, it's fully straight

Any way in the terminal (with commands) I can see if it's working?

In the config file:

I do still think it could be the USB cable as when I plugged the cable into the mains (not power bank) the screen lit up, went a bit dark but it was flicking for a few seconds before stopping.

Can you please tell me the meaning of that?

That red light next to the green does go on and off also, BUT it does not do it with it plugged into the power bank.

The low voltage warning came back however.

Would this have enough power? With a Micro USB adapter of course.

It seems it does go over 3.3a but not sure.

Oh and also from that code, with the cable plugged in without the low voltage warning:

pi@raspberrypi:~ $ vcgencmd measure_volts core
volt=1.3438V
pi@raspberrypi:~ $ vcgencmd measure_volts sdram_i
volt=1.2000V
pi@raspberrypi:~ $ vcgencmd measure_volts sdram_p
volt=1.2250V
pi@raspberrypi:~ $ vcgencmd measure_volts sdram_c
volt=1.2000V
pi@raspberrypi:~ $

Which model of Pi did you say you are using? I was not able to locate that in the message history, but that will help with cable selection. The USB-C cable you asked abou the specs being enough looks good for a Pi 4.

The ribbon connector is indeed suspect (I think it is a 40-pin FPC). You can pull the black tabs and re-insert it then lock the tabs back into place. As you suggested it should be straight / aligned and not angled like that.

It's the PI 3B+

I do have a Zero W, I could use it on there but I prefer it to be on the other.

I'll do the adjustments on that tomorrow for the board.

Guess what? It works!

I just got it connected to the soldered pins!

I may need some more help though.

The desktop is displayed and I am unable to do anything by touch. I presume I need a raspberry pi stylus pen?

It's the touch screen one I got.

I do have a stylus but it's not a PI one, would a non PI one work?

Good job getting the display going. It sounds like it was the misaligned 40-pin FPC ribbon connector?

The touch part is more difficult to get going if it did not come up automatically. I think the newer device tree layout hides some of the /dev files we have come to depend on. Try a few of the suggested tools here and let me know if you find some devices missing.

No it was them headers. Didn't want to know for some reason.

Do I need to do all of that guide for the touchscreen to fully work? I only want it so I can use it via a pen / hand touch

I can actually use the touchscreen so got no problems with that.

How do I rotate the screen so it's 270 degrees?

What was the solution for getting the touchscreen going?

screen rotation is done through the /boot/config.txt which already has a rotate=90 in it.

Code: Select all

dtoverlay=pitft28-resistive,rotate=90,speed=64000000,fps=30

I didn't do anything. I tried today with a finger and it worked. Tried yesterday but didn't do anything. Obviously I didn't try hard enough.

Thanks, I'll do that.

When using a pen with it (not the official one) if I use it in the bottom right then the mouse thing is picking it up to the top left.

Such as I open the menu from the bottom right using the pen instead of doing if top left.

I have done the screen so it's the correct way. 270 degrees in the config file.

You will need to go through the manual calibration setup.

https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-2-4 ... 2859019-17
If the "automagic" calibration technique isn't working for you, or you have some other setup where you need to carefully calibrate you can do it 'manually'

You will want to calibrate the screen once but shouldn't have to do it more than that. We'll begin by calibrating on the command line by running

sudo TSLIB_FBDEVICE=/dev/fb1 TSLIB_TSDEVICE=/dev/input/touchscreen ts_calibrate

follow the directions on the screen, touching each point. Using a stylus is suggested so you get a precise touch. Don't use something metal, plastic only!

raspberry_pi_tscalibrate.png
You should see five crosshair targets. If you see less than that, the touchscreen probably generated multiple signals for a single touch, and you should try calibrating again.
raspberry_pi_tscalib.png
Next you can run

sudo TSLIB_FBDEVICE=/dev/fb1 TSLIB_TSDEVICE=/dev/input/touchscreen ts_test

which will let you draw-test the touch screen. Go back and re-calibrate if you feel the screen isn't precise enough!
