The Open Lidar Project - Hack the Neato XV-11 Lidar

Howdy folks,

I was inspired by Ladyada's Open Kinect bounty and I got to thinking, "Hmm ... what else needs to be hacked?" Then it occurred to me - everyone's been talking about the scanning lidar system on the Neato Robotics XV-11 robot, but nobody has hacked it yet (or at least talked about it). So, I thought, why not put a bounty on that! So I did.

The bounty is up to $800 (if you buy the robot from RobotShop), with myself, Trossen Robotics and RobotNV chipping in money.
More details here:

It might not be as impressive as the Kinect, but it's certainly a super useful sensor - small, lightweight, and cheap (Neato is rumored to be offering "replacement parts" soon ... ).
Let's get this puppy hacked!
