Connecting an RGB led to the end of a wire

by ianloic on Tue Nov 23, 2010 1:53 pm

Hi,

I picked up a little baggy of the common-anode RGB LEDs that I want to use for a little christmas tree project. I'm running some TI TLC5941s off an Arduino to drive 5 RGB LEDs each, but I don't want them just stuck on a board, I want to stick them in ping-pong balls and put them all over the tree. So I want to basically attach a 4-pin RGB LED to the end of some wire, probably ribbon cable.

As I see it my options are:
* solder the wire directly onto the pins, apply copious electrical tape / heatshrink
* build a tiny board, attach wires and the LED.
* use an IDC connector or something like it on the end of the cable, stuff the LED pins into that

What's best / easiest? Am I missing the Right Solution through my inexperience? Any hints would be greatly appreciated.

Ian

I'd go with the solder & heatshrink option.

wear eye protection, since you'll probably be sticking your face right into your work.

you -might- want to also try the RGB LED dots we have in the shop and keep the TLC's for a different project

hot glue is great for this if you do end up soldering them onto wires. they are closer on most 5mm RGB leds, which is why I get the superflux shaped ones so I can work a little easier with them.

you may see 'superflux' LEDs in the shop very soon!
