Hacking Kinect Through Linux on VirtualBox

by mdm on Thu Nov 25, 2010 7:07 pm

I was excited after reading this tutorial: http://www.ladyada.net/learn/diykinect/ explaining how to reverse engineer the USB data and wanted to try it out on my own but I currently don't have a linux machine. Since I heard dual booting is much trickier I have installed Fedora 14 on VirtualBox as a guest of Windows 7 and wanted to know if the virtual machine would limit me from being able to read and write directly to the usb device or pose any other restrictions from a directly installed linux machine other than performance decreases. For instance I tried running the lsusb -vv command as suggested and when attempting to read and write to the devices attached to my computer it would say operation not permitted. I assumed this was because protections from the virtual machine and was hoping for a way around it.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Dual boot >> VM when the host's drivers may be a significant concern. I'm not a VM expert, but that would be my first guess about your point of failure.
