Simple RF M4 Receiver Antenna Question

Hi there.
The Simple RF M4 Receiver board comes with an antenna that is coiled up. If the coil is straightened out into a straight wire shape, how will that affect the range/performance? Is the coil shape necessary?

It is coiled only for shipment. For best range it should be extended - and preferably oriented vertically.
